Which students will be receiving iPads?
All students K-5 will be issued an iPad device for educational use.
Why were iPads chosen as the K-5 device?
Pilots of All Day Access iPads and Macbooks classrooms were conducted during the 2013-2014 school year. During such pilots, we solicited teacher and student feedback on both of these devices. A recommendation was given from the teachers and Tech team that iPads would be the preferred tool for the Elementary grade levels due to the lightweight design for mobile learning, students ability to use the device with little or no training, and teacher’s ability to easily implement this tool into multiple curriculum areas.
What is the iPad model provided by the district?
K-2 Grade students are issued 16GB iPad Minis
3-4 Grade students are issued 16GB iPad Airs
5th Grade students are issued 16GB iPad 4s
Will the iPad be used in every subject area?
All staff members received integration training for all subject areas and having a device for each student allows integration opportunities across all grade levels and subject areas. These devices are tools for learning and can be used based on subject area and course requirement.
The iPad will be the student’s tool for use at school. We expect that how the device is used and how often it is necessary will vary based on subject area and teacher requirements. Each of our teachers will be working to create an effective and inviting digital learning environment, regardless of grade level or subject area.
What happens if a student loses his or her charger or cable?
Students will be responsible for replacement accessories if they are lost or damaged. Please contact ipadhelp@ogschool.org to report the loss and receive replacement accessories.
What happens to iPads during school breaks? Summer?
The iPad will go home with the student during school breaks with the exception of Summer Break. The Tech Team will use summer to inventory and update devices for the new school year.
Does the district provide all the necessary apps?
Yes. The district will purchase and load all necessary apps on the devices. The iPads will all come with a core set of apps for each student that may vary by grade level. These apps will be managed and updated by the Tech Department.
Do I need to purchase accessories such as a keyboards or headphones for the iPad?
Keyboards for testing scenarios, like the PARCC exam, will be provided by the school. When the keyboards are not in use for testing, they will be available for student use in the classrooms. Parents are not required to provide a keyboard as students can utilize the built in touch keyboard on the iPad.
Headphones are on the supply list. The Tech Team will provide recommendations for headphones with built in microphones for purchase, but parents are free to purchase any headphones for their child.
How was this Technology Initiative developed?
Starting in the summer of 2013, Oak Grove administrators and the Technology team met with consultants in a series of sessions designed to help us take the vision we had for technology at Oak Grove and develop the vision into an Action plan.
What are the goals of the Technology Initiative?
The OGS Technology Plan Vision states: Oak Grove School stakeholders effectively use technology as an important tool for learning, creating, and sharing. Technology positively transforms the learning experience to prepare our students for success now and in the future.
Can I have my child bring their own device?
No. District devices are setup and configured according by the OGS tech team. The uniformity of the configuration ensures that all devices have the same capabilities, software, and apps. This allows OGS Tech Support to update the devices, diagnose issues, and fix hardware as necessary.
Can I opt out of the 1:1 Initiative?
While parents have the choice to opt out of the 1:1 take home, students will still be assigned a device for access during school hours. They will check the device in and out at the beginning and end of the school day and it will be charged overnight at school in preparation for the next school day.
What has been done to prepare the staff for this Initiative?
Staff members received professional development during the Summer of 2014 and throughout the school year of 2014-2015 in preparation for the All Day Access Technology Initiative.
How is the school prepared for this Initiative?
Our network bandwidth has been increased to accommodate the additional devices. Also, wireless access points have been added to each classroom and other areas to extend wireless coverage. We use a Mobile Device Manager, or MDM, to oversee the devices. An internet filter has also has been configured for those who utilize the internet.
Do students have access the internet?
Students have a browser available for classroom research and activities. Internet access is filtered.
What if I do not have Internet access at home?
For the 2014-2015 pilot, internet access is not required. Students will be instructed on how they can download materials during the school day that they may need for homework outside of the school day. Teachers know to be aware of students in their classes who may not have access at home and will ensure that students are able to complete all necessary work without penalty.
How is content being filtered at school?
At Oak Grove School, we utilize Lightspeed Systems (http://www.lightspeedsystems.com/products/web-filter/) for content filtering on all devices accessing the district’s wireless network. This system allows the filtering of online content that enters Oak Grove’s wireless network as staff, parents, and most importantly, students, are utilizing their devices.
Tiered levels of access allow network use while securing a kind of ‘walled garden’ of online access for students. We have three password-protected wireless networks at Oak Grove to control the network traffic and bandwidth use of guests while at the same time allowing staff and students priority access to the network and it’s bandwidth.
While content filtering allows students to work on the network safely, we also believe that teaching Digital Citizenship and Responsibility is an important aspect of technology education. Students are encouraged to make responsible choices and receive lessons in Digital Literacy and Citizenship from Common Sense Education that provides a spiraling K-12 Classroom Curriculum.
How will students transport iPads to and from school?
Students will transport iPads to and from school in their backpacks inside a neoprene sleeve. In addition to the GumDrop iPad case, this sleeve will keep the iPads protected from dirt, debris, and provides an extra layer of protection.
What if my child forgets his/her iPad at home?
We have a limited amount of loaner iPads available for student use. It is important to note that these loaners will not contain the personal content that may be needed to complete classroom assignments. If a loaner is not available, students will be provided with other tools to use during the school day so they can still participate in the classroom activities and lessons. However, it is an expectation that you will bring your iPad to school everyday.
Will there be tech support available for iPads after school hours?
A tech support email ipadhelp@ogschool.org has been set up for parents to email if there are problems or their child’s device needs support first thing on the next school day. An Oak Grove technology associate is available for tech support before and after school, by appointment, by emailing ipadhelp@ogschool.org
What happens if a device and/or accessory is lost, broken, or stolen?
If a device is lost, broken, or stolen it must be reported to ipadhelp@ogschool.org as soon as possible. A broken device will require a loaner until a repair is complete.
Can students add personal content to the iPads?
Not at this time. This is a tool that will be used for instructional purposes only and may not be used for personal use.
Can parents access/monitor student accounts and content on the iPad?
Absolutely! Your child will have the same username and password for all of his/her school-related accounts (Edmodo, Showbie, Google Drive, etc.). You can get this username and password from your child or his/her teacher.
You can also sign up for a parent/guardian account on Edmodo.com, which will enable you to stay up-to-date on your child’s activities and assignments. You can click here to learn more about setting up a parent/guardian account, or contact your child’s teacher for assistance with or additional information about this process.
